This park is world famous for its elephants, seen in all their playfulness, herds of them, adults and babies bathing and playing in the water or feeding. In addition to the elephants, spotted deer, sambhur, barking deer and langur, water buffalo and jackal are some of the prominent wild animals found in this park. Serpent eagles, hawk eagles, white bellied sea eagles, black capped bulbuls, malabar pied horn bills, white necked storks, open bills, white ibis, stork billed kingfishers, and peacocks are also found in good numbers. Among the migrant birds are the forest wagtails, whiskered terns, Osprey, sandpipers, and terns.

Udawalawe National Park is situated in both intermediate zone and the dry zone. Udawalawe park is adjacent to the Udawalawe reservoir and Walawe river. The extent of the Udawalawe park is approximately 30821 hectares and is situated 170km south east of Colombo. This park lies between Rathnapura and Moneragala districts.
