The balcony at Tissawewa Grand offers another space for
contemplation, with views across the garden to the ancient stupa of Mirisavetiya
. Located within the Sacred City, you'll find that Tissawewa is the ideal
location for forays to the ancient monuments. A few minutes away are
the museums, the “Great Stupa” the Ruwanweli, and the Sacred Bo
Tree. Dotted around too are colonial “government bungalows” in
amongst monuments and open parkland, and on festival days, thousands
of white-clad pilgrims from remote villages and towns joining in worship
at Sri Lanka's most ancient Buddhist shrines.
You look through shuttered windows, out to the lawns of the hotel, acres
dotted with teak, ebony, ironwood. Lawns, which, in the late afternoon,
are the meeting place for a troop of resident monkeys, grey langurs and
their cheeky young.
The long verandah at Tissawewa is designed to lounge in, relaxed, with
a book, a cup of tea. Or perhaps your crayons and a sketch book after a
stroll through the erstwhile Royal Pleasure Gardens, or around the ancient
city reservoir, the Tissawewa Lake.
Tissawewa is known too for its friendly and charming staff - and of course
for its food -hoppers, rice and curry, pittu, roti , the fried lake fish,
